Daniel JacobyLife Lessons from MathI walked into room 206 on the first day of my freshman year feeling nervous. I was placed into the accelerated pre-calculus course, a class made up mostly of juniors. I took a seat in the back right corner of the class room and began one of the most influential courses I have taken at ICJA. Mrs. Wasserstrom taught that class, and I learned an important life lesson from her. I always liked math, but mostly because it came easily to me. As I sat in Mrs. Wasserstrom’s classroom, I saw a teacher who loved math and appreciated the beauty of math concepts. This approach rubbed off on me. I can honestly say I truly love math, and even when I am struggling immensely with the concepts, I take pleasure in doing math problems. This love for math can be taken a step further. It is hard to name a
teacher who is more devoted to her career than Mrs. Wasserstrom. She cares
about the success of all of her students and goes to great measures to ensure
that they gain as much from her class as they can. Mrs. Wasserstrom would be
available at lunch so that I could go over what I did not understand. I once
missed a test, and she invited me to her home to take the test so that I would
not have to take time during school to do so. I walked out of room 206, and my outlook on my future had been changed. As I continue to take steps towards the adult work world, I will always carry with me the life lesson Mrs. Wasserstrom taught. Just as she put heart into her life’s work, I hope to put my heart into my life’s work. I will do my best to love what I do, and help those around me love it too. |
