Shira Redlich, SeniorDear prospective ICJA student, I've been in your place before; looking forward to high school with excitement and a little fear, unsure of what to expect. Well, to ease your nerves, I will tell you about my impression of the Academy and give you a little overview of what to expect. You should look forward to your high school experience with excitement. The greatest aspect about the Academy is the feeling I get when I walk down the halls—knowing every person that passes by and exchanging smiles and nods. It's this feeling of unity that makes the Academy seem like a family. At the Academy, you are never alone. In addition, both secular and Jewish-studies classes at ICJA are interesting and motivating. Where else can you go to analyze Shaul's downfall in Navi class, to learn Pirkei Avot in another, to watch a movie in Hebrew class that you actually understand, to finish the final part of masechet Shabbat in another class? Where else can you go to discuss the imagery in The Grapes of Wrath, to predict the number of future outbreaks of swine flu using calculus, to debat whether Nixon or Carter was a better president, to dissect a fetal pig in another class? Although it seems almost impossible, at the Academy, you can accomplish all this in just one day, all while being surrounded by your friends in a Jewish, safe environment. Moreover, no matter what your personality or interests are, the Academy has so much to offer you. If you are interested in politics and world events, you can become involved in Panim el Panim or Model U.N. If you love math, you can join Mathletes! If you are dedicated to helping others who are suffering around the world, you can join the Darfur Committee. If you are a true leader, you can run for student council. Also, if you are interested in sports, you can join the basketball, soccer, softball or baseball teams. These are only some of the extracurricular activities offered at the Academy, and students are always encouraged to start new clubs. There is something for everyone. Because the school is fairly small, each class provides a special opportunity to form a relationship with the teacher. Each teacher has an invested interest in each student and works to ensure each student's success. For example, not only do my teachers encourage me to call them at home if I have any questions, but I have gone to multiple teachers’ houses for review sessions and end-of-the-year celebrations. So, not only do you have friends to help out, but teachers are always there for you. As a senior, I am proud to be a part of the ICJA community. The Academy has helped me through challenges and has added immense meaning to my life. You must realize that the Academy is not just a school; it’s a second home. It will provide you with a sturdy basis for your Jewish identity and help you develop as a person. I hope to see you next year in the halls! Sincerely, Shira Redlich |
