Wrestlers Take Second in YU Wrestling Tournament
View Photos from the Tournament The ICJA wrestling team continued its tradition of excellence with a 2nd place finish at Yeshiva University’s Henry Wittenberg Invitational Wrestling Tournament. In the 15-year history of the tournament, Ida Crown has finished 1st six times and finished 2nd five times. Three individual champions led the way for the Aces. At 103 lbs., senior co-captain Avi Gluck capped his Junior Jacob Lowenstein captured his first Wittenberg title, defeating a challenger from Frisch, 6-5, in the championship bout at 135 lbs. Lowenstein finished the season with an outstanding 23-4 record. In addition, senior Yossi Ruben pinned his way to 1st place in the 215-pound weight class, with a first period fall on his opponent from North Shore Hebrew Academy in the finals. Senior co-captain Daniel Gutstein (130 lbs.) and sophomore Gabe Michael (189 lbs.) also posted 2nd place finishes. Gutstein, with a record of 25-12, has the distinction of being the first wrestler in ICJA history to have made it to the finals in each of the four tournaments in which he wrestled this year, including a gold medal at regionals. Sophomore Zach Bernstein (112 lbs.), junior Adir Feifel (125 lbs.), sophomore Eli Bernstein (145 lbs.), senior Co-Captain Jonathon Halpert (171 lbs.), and junior Jack Matanky (189 lbs.) each took 3rd place at their respective weights. Halpert showed much courage returning to action for his final Wittenberg, after suffering a shoulder injury earlier in the season. In addition to Lewis, 4th place performances were turned in by freshman Avi Gutstein (112 lbs.), junior Hartley Schwartz (160 lbs.), and freshman Noah Michael (285 lbs.). Finishing in 5th place were sophomore Jason Greenspan (112 lbs.), sophomore Barry Greengus (119 lbs.), sophomore Ezra Kapetansky (140 lbs.), senior Yaakov Friedman (160 lbs.), sophomore Mack Muller (215 lbs.), and senior Joseph Hasten (285 lbs.). Sophomore Zach Cohn (119 lbs.), freshman Meir Glaser (145 lbs.), senior Zev Steinberg (152 lbs.), and sophomore Brennan Muller (171 lbs.) posted 6th place finishes. The team championship was won by the Frisch School of New Jersey. Frisch has become the Academy’s rival for dominance of the tournament. “This round went to Frisch,” commented ICJA Head Coach Doug Klein. “Given how much we lost to graduation last year and how many returning veterans they had, the final result is not surprising. We did not run away from the fight, though, and our best guys went up against their best guys. Next year looks to be a different story.” Five of Frisch’s six champions will be graduating, whereas the Academy should have 18 place winners back for the 16 edition of the Wittenberg Tournament. |
