Dear ICJA Family:

Over the past several weeks, we have been working diligently to create a plan for our reopening of in-person learning this Fall. Meeting with staff, medical and public health experts, teachers, and students, we have carefully studied the guidelines for reopening from the Illinois State Board of Education, the Center for Disease Control, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and plans of other schools around the country.

Here is our ICJA reopening plan that presents a vision for both a safe reopening and a full in-person educational experience for our students and teachers. As you will read, many things about school life will be different. However, our school’s core function, providing a quality Jewish and general education, will be the same.

But, this plan depends upon several factors. First and foremost, the continued guidance of medical and public health officials, because there are still many things we are learning about COVID-19. We are committed to following their recommendations and doing all that is possible to safeguard our community’s health and safety.

The second key to this plan is the commitment of our students, parents, and teachers to abide by the guidelines. Without a doubt, our recommendations are restrictive, do require masks to be worn at all times in our building, social distancing to be observed, and hand hygiene to be followed. We cannot compromise on these basic guidelines, and we ask that our entire community support these behaviors, without exception.

Finally, we recognize that some community members may have health problems that will preclude them from participating in our reopening. Whether they be students or teachers, we will do all we can to accommodate their needs, providing virtual options for the school day.

Please read the attached document carefully and discuss it among your family. We are proud of this plan, and we believe that it charts a path forward through this pandemic and towards a full resumption of our ICJA experience once the pandemic has passed.

As we draw closer to our scheduled opening on August 24, we will update this document as needed. In addition, as described in this plan, there will be mandatory online meetings for both parents and students before the school year to review its requirements and answer any questions.

As always, please feel free to be in touch with any questions or concerns. I can be reached throughout the summer via email at lmatanky@icja.org.

Wishing you a pleasant and safe summer, I remain,
