The junior varsity and varsity Lady Aces basketball teams began their season the night of November 15 playing against Josephinum. Not only was this the first game of the season, but it was the first time that the JV and varsity Lady Aces were accompanied by new, female assistant coaches: Mrs. Carolyn Soffer and Brittany Peters, along with returning head coaches Zach Appel and Burt Levy. ICJA decided to hire new female assistant coaches because “It is important to have another voice on the team and even more important for that voice to be of a female,” says Mr. Harris.

The Varsity Lady Aces have the great privilege of having WNBA experienced player Brittany Peters. Peters joined the Lady Aces when second-year coach Burt Levy reached out to her in the fall. When Peters heard the coaching offer, she was immediately interested since she wanted to be able to coach a girls’ varsity basketball team, but had not yet found an opportunity that worked. “Having played at such a high level in college and in the WNBA, and under some of the best coaches, I feel like I have so much knowledge and skills to share. I am eager to pass that on to others who enjoy playing the game as much as I did,” she says.

Mrs. Carolyn Soffer, one of the academic services staff members, has joined the junior varsity Lady Aces as the assistant coach to third year returning head coach Zach Appel. Mrs. Soffer decided to take the position as assistant coach after chaperoning the varsity team tournament last winter in Miami, Florida. “I realized what wonderful girls are involved in Ida Crown’s girls’ basketball, and I wanted to be a part of that,” she says.

Mrs. Soffer has a lot of experience both watching basketball and playing on her middle school team. She is proud to be a part of a great team that represents Ida Crown and is already impressed with the camaraderie of the JV Lady Aces: “I watch girls of all different types come together for one common goal. We should all strive to show the type of sportsmanship the JV girls basketball team has for one another and the opposing team.” Mrs. Soffer is a positive addition to the JV Lady Aces and is sure to bring much success to the team in this season.
