On Tuesday evening, the Ida Crown wrestling team hosted its home opener as they took on Maine East High School. Freshman Noi Cohen (106) continued his winning ways as he downed his opponent 8-2. Cohen gave up the initial takedown in the match, but fought steadily back to take complete control of the contest. Junior Yitzchak Nadoff (138) won his first match with an impressive 17-2 technical fall. Senior Captain Yosef Marcucci (145) broke open a scoreless tie mid-way through the second period and proceeded to dominate the match thereafter, pinning his opponent in the third period. Junior Binyomin Krohn (152) cruised to a commanding 11-1 major decision, and junior Captain EJ Halpert (170) picked up his first victory on the season with a second period fall of his opponent. Freshman Enon Gurvich (106) fought hard to earn a 5-3 victory of his opponent. In the end, Maine East hung on to win the match, 30-27.  Nevertheless, the Aces wrestled well and look forward to next week’s showdown against crosstown powerhouse Niles West.

One week earlier, the wrestlers opened the 2017-2018 season at Evanston Township High School. In addition to Evanston, the Aces also competed against Chicago Public League powerhouse Lane Tech and Chicago Hope Academy.  The Hope team is coming off a very successful season last year when they were one of the top  eight Class 1A teams in the state.

Evanston was the first opponent of the evening, and the Aces got off to a great start. Freshman Noi Cohen (106) put in a gritty performance to win his first match ever, 6-3. Senior Captain Yosef Marcucci (145) was next up and cruised to a 10-2 major decision. Against the Evanston Frosh, Freshman Enon Gurvich (106) notched his first career win with a 6-3 decision. Sophomore Meir Cohen (132) pinned his opponent in the second period after jumping out to a 6-1 lead.
Chicago Hope was the second opponent of the evening. Meir Cohen proceeded to earn his second fall of the evening, as scored another second period pin. Junior Binyamin Krohn (152) powered to a solid victory in his match, as he needed only :33 seconds to pin his opponent.
The Aces finished the night against Lane Tech. Freshmen Noi Cohen and Gurvich came away with wins in this final match.
All-in-all, the ICJA wrestlers gave a good accounting of themselves against superior competition.
Many thanks to Masha Matten for the wrestling photos.
