The Aces JV basketball team this week enjoyed a happy ending to the recent emergency incident in January when a player from an opposing team had to be revived on the court. Luther North College Prep player Maleek Allen visited ICJA on Monday, along with his mother, to meet with the JV team. Steve Greenberg and Elisha Rosenblum, who saved his life on the night of the incident, were there to greet Maleek, along with the ICJA boys. Maleek even took a moment to pose with Greenberg, Rosenblum, Rabbi Matanky and Mr. Harris in front of the AED machine that saved his life.

The incident, which serves as a reminder to schools and organizations on the importance of strengthening emergency preparedness, was widely reported on locally and internationally on NBC Chicago, USA Today, the Forward, JTA, Arutz Sheva and CBS, as well as other places.

We are incredibly grateful that Coach Greenberg was present at the game and knew what to do at the right time. With the assistance of ICJA parent, Elisha Rosenblum who ran to get the AED, Coach Greenberg was able to use the training he received as an ICJA coach to successfully resuscitate the young man.

Students and staff dedicated learning to the player’s refuah shleimah after the incident. We are planning to purchase two more AED machines for the building and are planning a life-saving seminar for staff in the near future to train more people in CPR and the AED machine. We hope that the news of what happened at ICJA encourages more schools and institutions to be prepared for an emergency and we hope to never have to use our training again.
