Senior Gila Baer this week attended the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions conference here in Chicago, the world’s largest meeting of healthcare professionals devoted to cardiovascular disease. She learned about the opportunity from ICJA teachers David Newman and Allen Sears, who knew Gila would appreciate the rare glimpse into the exciting world of cardiovascular research.

More than 20 local high schools were represented at Students at Sessions. The students, who are exploring careers in science, toured the exhibit hall, which featured one of the largest medical exhibits in the world showcasing the latest diagnostic and imaging equipment, pacemakers and educational products. They  also participated in a Hands-Only CPR training session and learned more about careers in health and medicine through an afternoon panel discussion with a researcher, physician, nurse and several allied health professionals.

To be considered for inclusion in Students at Sessions 2014, Gila submitted an essay that demonstrated her interest in cardiovascular health and science. After completing the session, Gila says, “I am very grateful for the opportunity and really got to immerse myself in the cardiology world for the day.
